SEDRO WOOLLEY – When Squalicum senior inside linebacker Billy Scammell stripped the ball and recovered it on Sedro Woolley’s first play from scrimmage, that set the tone for the evening as the Storm went on to defeat the Cubs 36-14 on Saturday night.
Scammell finished with two tackles for loss, as well as two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Senior defensive linemen Aidan Weston and Garrett Kamkoff each had fumble recoveries that helped stall Sedro drives and supply short fields for the Storm.
The Cubs keyed on junior running back Djouvensky Schlenbaker early, which opened up the passing game for senior quarterback Mason Binning. Binning’s tremendous accuracy can’t be overstated as he connected on 17-of-20 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
6-foot-2 wide receiver Kai Posey was on the receiving end of all three touchdown passes, and the junior finished with six receptions for 120 yards. Binning hit five different receivers in his first five attempts.
Schlenbaker’s aggressive running style allowed him to rack up 141 of his team’s 149 rushing yards. He also scored two touchdowns, as well as a two-point conversion. Schlenbaker surpassed Luke Weber on Saturday, and is now in third place on the Squalicum Storm career rushing list with 2503 yards.
The Cubs did finish with 224 rushing yards, but most of it came in the fourth quarter against Squalicum’s back ups. Sedro ended up scoring two late touchdowns.
Junior linebacker Jaymeson Thompson led his team with seven solo tackles.
Squalicum (1-0) will be at Mount Vernon (0-1) on Friday at 7:00.
