BELLINGHAM – The Storm ripped off 34 straight points in the first half, and eventually beat New Westminster 41-12 at Civic Stadium on Friday night.
Before the Squalicum offense could even take the field it was senior speedster Nevhye Egging who took a punt 71 yards for a touchdown before the lights even turned on in the stadium.
On their first offensive drive of the game, Storm junior running back Malaki Smith scored on a 31-yard touchdown run by juking one defender, running through another one before dragging two Hyacks into the end zone.
Junior running back-turned-quarterback Marcus Nixon found Egging wide open down the seam late in the first quarter, and the two hooked up for a 50-yard touchdown completion.
Nixon then showed off his speed in the second quarter, and scored on a pair of long touchdown runs before the half.
He scored his third touchdown of the game to cap the first drive of the third quarter, and he finished with 106 yards on just five carries.
New Westminster scored a couple of late touchdowns after the continuous clock started.
Defensively, the Storm were led by senior linebacker Deandre Dunmore who registered a team-high 9.5 tackles and two tackles for loss. The Storm also got interceptions from senior safety Brady Scammell and sophomore outside linebacker Laki Fagaatau.
Squalicum (1-0) will face another Canadian squad next week when they face Seaquam at Civic Stadium on Friday at 7:00.
