BELLINGHAM – The Storm continued their dominance in the WesCo North on Friday night with a 42-10 win over Stanwood at Civic Stadium.
The offensive line was on point, and Squalicum did what it wanted to up front. The Strom totaled 395 yards rushing on 45 carries. Junior running back Devante Powell was responsible for most of the yards, picking up 230 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries.
In the first quarter he took a direct snap and sprinted to the left side of the field for a touchdown to make it a 7-0 game early.
The Spartans had a strong second quarter, scoring 10 points, and nearly making a 42-yard field goal just before half time. But, touchdown runs by Powell, and junior Dedrick Mitchell on an end around, gave the Storm a 21-10 lead at the half.
It was all Squalicum in the second half. Quarterback Spencer Lloyd came into the game as Whatcom County’s leading rusher and didn’t have a designed run in the first half. He started running the ball in the second half, and ended with 47 yards and a touchdown. He still leads the county, and is just four yards shy of 1000 for the season.
Powell scored his third touchdown of the game in the beginning of the fourth quarter on a 47-yard dash around the right end. The carry put him over 200 yards on the evening. Backup running back sophomore Steven Owens rattled off a 35-yard run that put Squalicum inside the Stanwood 5-yard line. Owens finished off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.
The defense got strong contributions from linebacker Collin McEachran and defensive lineman Jackson Campbell. They combined for three sacks and three tackles for loss. Powell also intercepted a pass in the second quarter.
The Storm (6-1) will travel to Oak Harbor (6-1) this Friday night in a battle that will decide the WesCo North 3A champions.
