BELLINGHAM – The one thing that Squalicum coach Nick Lucey wanted to improve on the most this season was his team’s defense. His defense stepped up in a big way on Saturday night when it shut out Marysville-Getchell 49-0 at Civic Stadium.
The Storm defense allowed just 35 rushing yards and intercepted four passes. Junior safety Devante Powell and junior linebacker Branden Powers each returned their interceptions for touchdowns. Sophomore defensive back Aiden Weston also intercepted a pass.
Senior quarterback Spencer Lloyd came into the game as Whatcom County’s leading rusher and scorer, and he wouldn’t relinquish his lead on either category. He scored on an 84-yard run on Squalicum’s second play from scrimmage. Lloyd would score again in the third quarter, this time from a yard away, and he finished the game with 179 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Junior wide receiver Dedrick Mitchell scored an 8-yard touchdown in the first quarter on a fly-sweep, and he also led the Storm in receiving with four grabs for 78 yards. Freshman running back Ben Schlenbaker also scored a touchdown on a 25-yard run in the third quarter.
Junior Mason Lloyd had an extremely complete game in all facets. He scored a 12-yard touchdown on a quarterback keeper, he intercepted a pass on defense and was 6-for-6 on his extra points.
The Storm (3-1) will travel to Meadowdale (2-2) on Friday to take on the Mavericks at 5PM.
