MARYSVILLE – Time ran out on the Strom, as they were driving down the field down by six. A flurry of passes from sophomore quarterback Mason Binning (in his first varsity action) to senior wide receiver Zach Tucker wowed the Squalicum faithful near the end of the game, but it wasn’t to be as Marysville-Pilchuck won 20-14 at Quil Ceda Stadium on Friday night.
Already without starting running back Branden Powers, the Storm started with junior Devante Powell in the backfield. After the Tomahawks jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, Squalicum moved Spencer Lloyd from quarterback to running back, and inserted Binning behind center. Lloyd responded by scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter, and was an absolute work horse, as he gained 172 yards on 26 carries.
A late Pilchuck touchdown gave the lead back to the Tomahawks at half time, 17-14. Both defenses clamped down in the second half, with neither team reaching the end zone. However, Marysville-Pilchuck was able to connect on its second field goal of the game.
The Storm defense was led by junior linebacker Collin McEachran and Lloyd, each of whom had multiple tackles for losses. Senior safety Declan McGhee proved to be a play-maker for the second consecutive week when he intercepted a pass and returned 72 yards for a touchdown. The touchdown was nullified by a penalty, however. McGhee had a pick-six last week against Arlington.
Binning finished the game completing 10-of 21 passes for 103 yards. Tucker led the Storm in receiving with seven grabs for 90 yards.
Squalicum (2-1) will host Marysville-Getchell (1-2) on Saturday night at Civic Stadium.
