NOOKSACK – A two-run home run in the sixth inning by sophomore catcher Trent Miller proved to be the difference, as the Storm defeated the Pioneers 6-4 on Friday.
“I’ve been expecting Trent to bust loose,” Squalicum coach John Inge said. “He’s a great, young catcher and he has a bright future ahead of him.”
Miller’s home run in the sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie, and gave August Williams the win on the mound. Reid Mazzacano picked up his first save of the season.
Nooksack Valley got off to a great start when center fielder Koert Weidkamp hit a towering 3-run home run with two outs in the first inning. Squalicum answered back by scoring three runs in the second inning, highlighted by Travis Krause’s two-run single with two outs.
Pioneer pitcher Evan Neitling settled down after Krause’s hit, and he struck out the next four batters in a row. However, Mazzacano scored in the fourth inning after stealing third base, and when the throw got past Casey Bauman, Mazzacano sped towards home plate to break the tie.
Junior Pioneer catcher Austin O’Bryan tied it up in the fifth inning with a solo home run to left center field on a full count, and that led up to Miller’s heroics in the sixth inning.
“You know, we’re only 4-5 right now,” Inge said. “We have a young team, only two seniors, but we’ve played some great teams. We’ve already faced Lynden and Meridian each twice.”
Squalicum is scheduled to host Sedro Woolley (4-3) at Joe Martin Field on Monday at 4:00, and Nooksack Valley (5-3) will play host to Blaine (2-5) on Monday at 4:30.
