BURLINGTON – It may not have been the prettiest game, but the Storm did what they had to do to come out on top against Burlington-Edison 28-21 at Kirkby Field on Friday night.
Squalicum dominated the first half, mostly behind the strong running of sophomore Marcus Nixon who scored a touchdown in each of the first two quarters. Nixon finished with 142 yards rushing on 26 carries.
The Tiger run-game never really got on track, which forced them to throw the ball more than usual. A few deep passes landed, and Burlington-Edison finally got on the board in the third quarter when a deep 28-yard touchdown pass landed.
The Storm answered back later in the quarter with a 68-yard touchdown pass from junior Josh Leonard to senior Jacob Sorenson, which gave Squalicum a 21-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers kept capitalizing on big pass plays, which led them into the red zone, and twice scored on 1-yard touchdown runs by senior quarterback Anthony Lemos. Just like that, the game was tied at 21.
However, the Storm had one more big play in the holster as Leonard went deep for Sorenson once again, who was triple covered, but still came down with the pass. He than ran away from the Tiger defenders and scored the eventual game-winning touchdown.
Sorenson had a career night with four catches for 148 yards.
Burlington-Edison had two more possessions after Sorenson’s heroic touchdown, but threw incomplete passes on fourth down both times.
The Storm (3-2) continue conference play at home this Friday when they take on Lakewood (2-3) at 7:00.
