OAK HARBOR – The Wildcats collected over 100 yards more than the Storm. The Wildcats also ran 45 more plays than the Storm did. Oak Harbor played the game it wanted to, ball control, controlling the clock, but when it was forced to pass with time running down, that was when Squalicum was able to take advantage and come away with a 43-40 win at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
Oak Harbor had numerous long, time-consuming drives, including one near the end of the game that resulted in a 17-yard touchdown pass. The touchdown gave the Wildcats a 40-35 lead, and when they decided to go for two, it was outside linebacker Spencer Lloyd that rushed around the edge and sacked the quarterback.
Lloyd must have really felt the momentum, because just a few moments later on the following possession it was him that ran through the Oak Harbor defense, 62 yards for what would be the game-winning touchdown with 2:07 remaining in the game. He then completed a 2-point conversion to Devante Powell using a great pump fake.
With the Wildcats forced to air the ball out with little time left it was senior corner back Ashton Toctocan that had another one of his acrobatic interceptions, this one being one he will always remember, and it was his fourth on the season which leads the team.
Lloyd finished the game with 143 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. He also completed 3-of-6 passes for 64 yards and another touchdown.
Powell had another great game at running back. He only carried the ball nine times, but he totaled 127 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also scored on an 87-yard kickoff return in the third quarter after another one of those long sustaining drives by the Wildcats.
Junior kicker Mason Lloyd also connected on all five of his extra points, which became extremely important, the later the game went.
Spencer Lloyd’s touchdown pass came in the second quarter on a play-action pass to tight end Collin McEachran from 30 yards out.
Jackson Campbell had another great game defensively with two tackles for loss. Spencer Lloyd had two sacks along with another tackle for loss, and Toctocan had a tackle for a loss to go along with his interception.
Squalicum (7-1) will play it’s crossover game against the Wesco South 3A champion Snohomish (6-2) on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium
