Squalicum’s Comeback Not Enough as Trojans Triumph

BELLINGHAM – Squalicum had to score a run in the bottom of the 5th inning to keep the game from ending, which it did. The Storm went on to score six more runs in the final two innings to make it interesting, but eventually lost to Meridian 11-8 in both teams’ openers on Monday at Joe Martin Field.

Senior lefty Matthew Belanger earned the win for the Trojans, pitching five strong innings, allowing six hits, two runs while striking out three and not walking anyone. Offensively, he walked twice, stole a base and scored a run to help his cause.

Second baseman Bryson Hickok also had a big game for Meridian, going 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and a walk. The senior leadoff hitter also scored a game-high three runs. The Trojans were helped offensively by Dylan Hickok, Baker Otter and Warren Utschinski, who all add two hits.

Squalicum was led offensively by junior leadoff hitter, Reid Mazzacano, who had a pair of hits, an RBI and a stolen base. Junior Josh Boysen had two runs batted in and sophomore Trent Miller scored two runs.

Meridian (1-0) will travel to Blaine to take on the Borderites on Wednesday at 4:30, while the Storm (0-1) will travel to Lakewood and battle the Cougars on Wednesday at 4:00.
