BELLINGHAM – The Tomahawks flew to the ball on defense, controlled the ball on offense and that combination was a successful one as Marysville-Pilchuck defeated Squalicum 34-7 at Civic Stadium on Friday night.

The Tomahawks ran 54 rushing plays, and the Storm were able to only run 53 plays the entire game. Slow, methodical drives was the force behind the M-P offense, and it slowly wore down Squalicum.

Whatcom County’s leading rusher, Ben Schlenbaker, was held to 62 yards up until his last carry when he broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run down the right sideline. He also caught a pair of passes and returned a pair of kickoffs.

Junior quarterback Mason Binning completed 12 passes for 100 yards, and Reed Richardson was his main target. The sophomore finished with four receptions for 48 yards.

Defensive lineman Cesar Vasquez and linebacker Billy Scammell led the Storm defense, and they were collectively in on 25 tackles.

Squalicum (1-2) will attempt to get its first conference victory of the season when they travel to Marysville-Getchell (1-2) this Friday.
