BELLINGHAM – Ferndale was down 11-6 in the opening set against the Storm, but a 9-point serving run by senior Libby Miller helped the Golden Eagles come back and win the set and Ferndale went on to win the following two sets at Squalicum High School on Thursday night.
Miller also debuted at libero and totaled 16 digs to go along with her seven aces.
Golden Eagle junior outside hitters Alyvia Semu and Kaelee Bungard both had extraordinary performances, as they combined for 21 kills.
“Each player showed up and contributed to the win tonight, and after only nine practices,” Ferndale coach Patti Hoelzle said in an email. “To see our team come together, and show such heart and discipline, it was a great opening night for us.”
Senior Jamie Johnson added three blocks and 29 assists, and junior Avery Schneider had six kills and two blocks for the Golden Eagles.
Ferndale (1-0) will travel to Blaine (1-1) to take on the Borderites at 7:00 on Saturday, and Squalicum (1-1) will be at Lynden (1-0) on Monday at 7:00.
