On this day in Whatcom County football history:
1980: Bellingham senior wide receiver Steve Jones set a new Whatcom County record by catching 12 passes in a 14-0 loss to Mount Vernon. His record stood for 17 years, and after 40 years it still hasn’t been matched by a Red Raider receiver.
1980: Nooksack Valley senior Chuck Handy had a game for the ages. He returned two punts for a touchdown, returned an interception for a touchdown and ran for 96 yards and a fourth score in a 47-8 win over Blaine.
1997: Mount Baker senior running back Jacob Prince had a game that every Mountaineer fan will remember. After teammate Joe Schleimer went down in the first quarter (after already rushing for 107 yards) with an ankle injury, Prince went on to rush for 422 yards in a 48-12 win over Granite Falls. Not only was it a new school record, but it was the new record for Whatcom County and Washington State!
1997: Lynden Christian senior wide receiver Rob Dykstra set a new school record with 11 receptions in a 20-12 win over Lakewood. 23 years later, his school record still stands.
2014: Squalicum senior quarterback Christian Jorgensen set a new school record with 332 passing yards in a 49-29 loss to Lynden. It still stands as the school record today.
