On this day in Whatcom County football history:

1979: Stu Gorski collects his first win as the new head coach of the Mount Baker Mountaineers by defeating Meridian 18-12. Senior quarterback John Rathjen was involved in all three touchdowns for the Mounties, as he threw for 112 yards and two scores while rushing for 57 yards and a touchdown. Senior Don Zender caught both of the touchdown passes. Coach Gorski still stands as the third winningest coach in school history behind Ron Lepper and Bob Tisdale.

1990: Former Lyncs quarterback Dan Kaemingk returned to the Pacific Northwest to take over the head coaching job for Lynden Christian and picked up his first varsity victory in a 19-12 contest against Meridian. Juniors David Cowan and Greg Terpstra each played huge roles in the LC win. Cowan ran for 94 yards and a touchdown while passing for 82 yards and a touchdown. Terpstra ran for 42 yards and a score, and both players also intercepted a pass.

2007: Senior Kyle Keller became the first player in Squalicum history to catch three touchdowns in a single game. He also intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown in the Storm’s 71-14 win over Lakewood. Keller’s school record has been matched a few times, but has still not been broken.
