On this day in Whatcom County football history:

1989: The Lyncs begin the season with a bang, with a 27-6 victory over Meridian, and it was junior transfer Jon Vander Griend who became the first player in school history to catch three touchdown passes in a game in school history. He caught a total of six passes for 101 yards, and the 6-foot-4 185-pounder would go on to lead Whatcom County in receiving in 1989. His school record stood for 14 years.

2000: The Sehome Mariners defeated Edmonds-Woodway 31-0, and in doing so, head coach Jamie Plenkovich picked up his first varsity victory. A former Mariner himself, Plenkovich would coach Sehome for four years before taking over at Ferndale, and coaching them to a state championship in 2005.

2006: First-year head coach Jay Dodd, who was an assistant at an extremely strong Prosser team before joining Blaine, got his first varsity win as a head coach by beating Sedro-Woolley 42-10. Dodd was also a former Borderite, that was a senior on the only team in school history that went undefeated in league, in 1995.

2017: In a crazy game that included numerous school, and Whatcom County, records, Squalicum defeated South Delta 85-70. It’s the highest scoring game in Whatcom County history, and the Storm’s 85 points is the most ever by a Whatcom County team. Squalicum also totaled 836 yards of offense, which is the Whatcom County record, and Squalicum ran for a team-record 605 yards. Senior running back Triston Smith set a school record with 445 yards on the ground. Smith would go on to lead Whatcom County in rushing in 2017.

2017: While Squalicum and South Delta were having an offensive shootout at Civic Stadium, Nooksack Valley was putting up huge numbers as well. The Pioneers defeated Granite Falls 56-34, and in the process they totaled a school-record 768 yards of total offense. It must have been something in the air that night…
