MARYSVILLE – The big play did in Ferndale on Friday night as Marysville-Pilchuck beat the Golden Eagles 49-15 in a battle of the 3A unbeatens.
Ferndale also had trouble getting its ground game going early on, and were forced to punt multiple times, which the Tomahawks turned into quick points.
The passing game did look sharp early on, and senior quarterback Mark Schlichting completed five passes in a row at one point in the first half. He finished completing 9-of-17 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, which went to senior tight end Xander Castleberry in the fourth quarter.
Whatcom County’s leading rusher Isaiah Carlson was held to just 45 yards on 12 carries, but the Golden Eagles did finish the game with 191 yards rushing as a team. Sophomore Kyler Bowen picked up 65 of them on the final drive of the contest, and he also scored the final touchdown.
Sophomore wide receiver Conner Walcker had another impressive game as well, catching five passes for 82 yards.
Ferndale (1-0) will try to get back on track this Thursday night when they travel to Oak Harbor (2-3) to battle the Wildcats.
