When I was at a Blaine football practice back in August, I saw an amazing diving catch. It was made by Mercado. His teammates cheered his great play, and he had a big smile on his face. I remembered his involvement last season as a slot receiver (14 catches – 172 yards), and I was excited to see him outperform himself in 2018. He did, but not in the way I had thought. He was moved to running back in week 5, and a new position was born. Despite his size, he could handle over 20 carries a game, and run between the tackles. He ran for four touchdowns against Cedarcrest and he ran for 189 yards in the must-win game against Mountlake Terrace. He was named All-Conference 1st Team as a defensive back and All-Conference 2nd Team as a running back.
