
YAKIMA – The Annie Wright boys basketball team showed every reason why it is the top-ranked 1A team in the state by defeating Meridian 53-22 in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

The overall athleticism of the Gators got the best of the Trojans early, as pressure defense and offensive rebounding put Annie Wright up early. The Trojans got their first points of the game with 2:45 left in the first quarter on a pair of free throws from senior guard Jaeger Fyfe.
Meridian was held without a field goal in the first quarter and found itself down 15-5.
The Trojans got their first field goal of the game a minute into the second quarter when senior center James Hedahl scored on a putback.
Annie Wright’s length amounted to 28 rebounds, eight steals and three slam dunks… and that all came before halftime as the Gators held a 33-10 lead at the midway break.
Neither team connected on many shots in the third quarter as the two squads totaled just 13 points in the period, and Annie Wright outscored Meridian 13-8 in the final period.
Hedahl finished with five points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots to lead Meridian, which also got four points each from seniors Talon Jenkins and Fyfe, as well as sophomores Trey Alexander and Pierce Brzozowski.
The Trojans (18-9) will battle Seton Catholic tomorrow at 12:15 in the consolation round.
