PESHASTIN – In the third meeting between these two schools in the last 12 months it was Colville that got the better of Meridian 28-14 on Saturday afternoon at the Peshastin-Dryden Sports Complex.
Last year’s Class 1A state champion Indians got off to a hot start and scored on their opening drive with a 35-yard touchdown run. But, on the ensuing kickoff it was Trojan senior Trent Martin that caught the ball at his own 10-yard line, and handed it off to senior Ryan Johnson at the 9-yard line and Johnson sped down the Colville sideline, made one man miss and he went on to score on a 91-yard touchdown return. Zack Loya’s extra point tied the game at seven.
A strong drive put Meridian into scoring position again and senior quarterback Cameron Webster scored from nine yards out, and the Trojans were in the lead early in the second quarter, 14-7. It would be the last time Colville would allow points for the remainder of the game.
The Indian offense used a power run game for most of the contest, but it was a few deep passes that but them back in the lead. A 53-yard pass before half time would tie the game, and a 77-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter put them in the lead.
Webster finished with 155 yards passing, completing 15-of-30 passes. Martin was his main target, as he caught four passes for 40 yards. Webster also led on defense as he was in on 15 tackles, while senior captain Trent Gookstetter had an interception.
Meridian (0-2) will host Amador (2-0) on Saturday evening. Amador will be traveling from California.
