SEDRO WOOLLEY – There were a lot of newcomers dressed in black and white to the Friday night light experience, and after falling behind 25-0 at half time, Meridian was ultimately defeated by Sedro Woolley 44-14.
The Cubs were efficient on both the ground (averaging over five yards a carry) and through the air (16-of-20 passes completed), and they were able to score four touchdowns in the first half. The Sedro defense scored the first touchdown of the second half on a 43-yard interception return.
New Meridian quarterback Cameron Webster was accurate, completing 13-of-20 passes for 111 yards, but he was under pressure the entire game. He was knocked out of the game for a few possessions in the second half, and junior backup quarterback Wesley Kurz completed two passes for 25 yards.
Webster was also very active on defense, leading the way with seven solo tackles as well as assisting on four more.
Senior running back Trent Martin had a great overall game for the Trojans scoring both of his team’s touchdowns, leading the team in both rushing (55 yards on 12 carries) and receiving (60 yards on six receptions), and he also had 1.5 tackles for loss from his inside linebacker position. Junior wide receiver Ethan Brooks also hauled in four passes for 40 yards.
Junior defensive lineman Mason Knutson was in on a pair of quarterback sacks, which included a forced fumble.
Meridian (0-1) will have another tough one this Saturday when they travel to Peshastin to take on the defending 1A State Champion Colville Indians (0-1).
