YAKIMA – In a wild, back-and-forth, volleyball match, Bear Creek outlasted Meridian in five sets in the first round of the 1A State Volleyball Tournament in the Yakima SunDome on Friday.

The Grizzlies took advantage of multiple big runs in the first set and won 25-18.
The Trojans battled back to take the next two sets 25-17 and 25-15 before Bear Creek won the fourth set 25-15.
The Grizzlies used that momentum in the fifth set to jump out to an 8-4 lead which caused Meridian to burn a timeout. A kill by junior Taya Benson, a Bear Creek side-out and a block by junior Gracie Pap closed the gap to 10-7, but Bear Creek went on to score the next three points.
Sophomore Eden Bernardy had a kill and an ace to bring the Trojans within four points, down 13-9, but the Grizzlies scored the next two points to take the match.
Meridian will now face Zillah at 6:15 tonight.
