YAKIMA – Cougar junior guard Brady Angelo was on target early, as he connected on 5-of-6 deep balls in the first half, and he finished with 25 points to lead Seton Catholic (18-6) to a 72-60 victory over Meridian (14-12) in the first round of the boys 1A state basketball tournament.
An early outside shooting barrage (nine three-pointers made in the first half) by the Cougars provided a comfortable lead against the taller Trojans.
Seton Catholic (18-6) held a 43-24 lead at the half, and while Meridian (14-12) outscored the Cougars in the second half, and despite multiple deep shots converted by junior Talon Jenkins, the Trojans just weren’t able to get enough three-point shots to fall late in the game.
6-foot-4 freshman Kaiden Wilson posted a double-double for Seton Catholic with 15 points and 14 rebounds. He also shot 12-of-16 from the foul line and played the entire game.
Jenkins led Meridian with 25 points and 11 rebounds, and junior Jaeger Fyfe scored 11 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
The win propelled the Cougars into the quarterfinal round where they will face top-ranked Zillah at 10:30 tomorrow.
Meridian’s season came to a close.
