WENATCHEE – It was too many self-inflicted errors for Mount Baker as Wenatchee defeated the Mountaineers 10-0 at Lee Bofto Field at the Apple Bowl on Saturday night.
It was also the first time in 10 years that Mount Baker has been shut out, despite gaining 232 yards of offense.
The Panthers kicked a 30-yard field goal to close out their opening drive of the game, and then scored a on a pick-six on the opening play from scrimmage to start the second half.
The Mountaineers had numerous chances, and got inside the Wenatchee 20-yard line a few times, but fumbles wiped away scoring possibilities.
Senior linebacker Davin Beason was all over the field on defense, as he totaled 18 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and he also caused a fumble. But, it wasn’t only on defense that he was all over the field. Offensively, he was moved from center to quarterback at the start of the fourth quarter in hopes of giving the Mountie offense an added burst. He did complete 3-of-4 passes for 51 yards, but couldn’t get his team into the end zone.
Junior fullback Marcques George led Baker with 76 yards rushing, and senior halfback Jesse Sande chipped in with 74 on the ground.
Senior Thayer Brown and sophomore Vance Lawrence picked up quarterback sacks, and senior Caleb Horsmon picked up his second interception of the season.
Mount Baker (1-1) will be playing Seattle Prep (2-0) on Friday at 7:45, at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
