SEDRO-WOOLLEY – Needing a win to keep post season dreams alive, Squalicum took care of business in a big way by defeating Sedro-Woolley 34-14 at Tom Mullen Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
The previously unbeaten Cubs looked very sharp on their opening drive, going 50 yards on eight plays, and scoring a 12-yard touchdown. However, the Storm coaching staff made rapid adjustments, and held Sedro-Woolley to just 77 yards for the rest of the game.
The defense was led by senior outside linebacker Bryson Lamb who totaled a team-high 9.5 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback sack. Senior defensive end Hayden Flaherty also had two stops behind the line of scrimmage, and knocked two passes down.
Senior quarterback Leyton Smithson used his quick feet to score two touchdowns in the second quarter, and Squalicum held a 14-7 halftime lead.
Smithson then broke off an 80-yard touchdown run when he faked a pass to his left, and then sprinted down the right sideline. He finished the game with 153 yards rushing on 12 carries. Not to be outdone, Djouvensky Schlenbaker showed everyone in attendance that he was back to full health.
The senior running back had already surpassed 100 yards in the contest, but then almost doubled his output when he scored on a 90-yard scamper in the third quarter for his first touchdown since September 17th. Also, on that run he became the ninth player in Whatcom County history to surpass 4,000 career rushing yards.
Schlenbaker finished the game with a season-high 238 yards on 31 carries, and scored his second touchdown of the contest in the fourth quarter. As a team, Squalicum rushed for 413 yards, and averaged nearly nine yards per run.
The Storm (4-2) will host Nooksack Valley (3-3) in a non-conference game at Civic Stadium on Friday at 5:00.
