SHORELINE – For those lucky enough to live in Whatcom County, we know just how high of a level our prep basketball teams play at during the winter. That was obvious earlier this month in Yakima, as three local teams brought home state titles and another a 6th place finish. That Whatcom County talent was on display once again this past Saturday night at the annual Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association 1A/2A All-State game held at King’s High School.
Lynden Christian’s Avery Dykstra, named class 1A State Player of the Year by the WSGBCA, was joined by teammate Sam VanLoo, Nooksack Valley’s Katrina Gimmaka and Meridian’s Ellesse FitzGerald in the contest.
Lyncs Head Coach Brady Bomber was also honored at the event after being named the WSGBCA State Coach of the year (for all classifications).
The accolades did not stop there. After leading the 1A squad with 22 points on nine of fourteen shooting and five rebounds, Gimmaka was named the 1A/2A Player of the Game. VanLoo finished with a double-double of twelve points and ten rebounds, Dykstra added eleven points on top of a couple of steals and FitzGerald led the 1A team with 36 minutes played.
All combined, the group from Whatcom County accounted for close to half of the 1A’s totals in both points and rebounds, helping the 1A defeat the 2A squad 106-85.
