BELLINGHAM – Turnovers and untimely penalties did the Mariners in as they lost their conference opener to Archbishop Murphy 20-10 at Civic Stadium on Friday night.
The first half was very even, with Sehome controlling the ball for most of it. A 14-play Mariner drive, which took up the majority of the second quarter, was halted by an interception in the end zone, and both teams went into the locker room at halftime scoreless.
The Wildcats came out strong in the second half, and scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. Strong running by junior Tommy Funk allowed Sehome to answer back with a 23-yard field goal by senior Aidan Andrews. Unfortunately for the Mariners, Archbishop Murphy would score on its very next play from scrimmage on an 83-yard touchdown strike down the middle of the field to put the Wildcats up by 10.
Sehome was forced to punt on its next possession, but two plays later an interception by sophomore cornerback Alden Jacobs gave the Mariners possession on Archbishop Murphy’s side of the field. Six plays later, sophomore running back Lucas Ortega scored from a yard out to make it a 13-10 game.
On the following Wildcat drive, Sehome made big stop after big stop, but they were nullified by penalties, allowing in automatic first downs. Both were on 3rd-and-long situations. The Wildcats took advantage of the situation and scored from a yard out.
Funk led the Mariners on the ground with 87 yards on 17 carries, and sophomore Braddock Duckworth caught five passes for 48 yards. Defensively, senior inside linebacker Hayden Huntley led with 10 tackles, including a tackle for loss and sack. Funk also registered two sacks, upping his season total to five.
Sehome (1-2) will face Sedro Woolley (3-0) on the road on Friday at 7:00. The Cubs haven’t allowed a point all season.
