ANACORTES – After five very tightly contested sets, Meridian triumphed over Anacortes 3-2 on Wednesday night.
After winning the first two sets (27-25 and 25-23), it looked like the Trojans could make it a quick night. The Seahawks had other plans, as they came back to win the next two sets 25-23 and 26-24. After four sets, which all ended in two-point margins, it was Meridian that came through in the end to win the final set 15-12.
Sophomore Finnley Claeys starred all over the court, leading her team with 17 kills, five aces and 23 digs. Senior Makenzie Flake contributed with 15 kills of her own to go along with five aces.
The Trojans started the season 4-0, but abruptly had their streak snapped after losing to an extremely strong Burlington-Edison squad last Thursday. The Tigers are currently 6-0.
Continuing the youth movement in downtown Laurel, freshman Joslyn Sipma played great at the net with nine kills and three blocks, while sophomore Malaysia Smith had 49 assists, four aces and a pair of blocks.
Meridian (5-1) will have a great match up tonight when it hosts Lynden (4-1).
